The Paquena Cup
The Paquena Cup is a race run with Airships approximately every 8-12 years. It began in 427 with an informal race between Duke Cesar Bahorel of Paquena and Lord Serge Godard of Betebe. After dealing with years of boasting by Duke Bahorel, Lord Godard demanded a rematch, which he finally got in 436, however, he still lost. The cup got it's name in 445, when, as a joke, Duke Bahorel gave Lord Godard another rematch, but this time inviting all his friends to participate as well. From that point forward, the Cup became a formal affair.
Paquena owned ships dominated the race until 689, at the 27th running of the Cup, the Oni airship Swifttail won, marking the very first loss of the Cup for Paquena. This was a devestating blow to the Paquenan's pride. To this date, approximately three of every five Cups has been won by a Paquena owned ship.
The running of the Cup is structured in such a way that the home port almost always has an advantage over the Challengers. All the races are run in a one on one fashion over the course of a few weeks. Ships from other islands run a double elimination tournament competing to see who gets to actually challenge for the Cup. Ships from the home port compete against each other in the same fashion todetermine who will get to defend the Cup. Then the Challenger and Defender sail against each other in a best four out of seven for the possession of the Cup.
Hosting the Cup at a home port is a guaranteed boost to the local economy for months, first as the teams get prepped to sail, and then as the visitors show up to watch the numerous races.
